Mystery bounty strategy: how to play each phase

A mystery bounty tournament sets part of the prize pool aside as bounties of unknown size. Nobody carries a bounty on their head; instead, every knockout during the bounty phase earns a draw from a pool of envelopes — most small, a few enormous. Two things follow from that structure, and almost every mystery bounty mistake comes from missing one of them. First, before the bounty phase a knockout is worth nothing extra. Second, during it a knockout is worth exactly one number: the average remaining envelope. Learn to track that number and the rest of the strategy is arithmetic.

How the format actually works

The details vary by room, but the skeleton is consistent. A fixed share of each buy-in — often around half — goes into a bounty pool. That pool is divided into envelopes, typically one per player remaining when the bounty phase begins, with a deliberately skewed distribution: a handful of envelopes hold prizes worth many buy-ins, the rest hold amounts close to the minimum. The bounty phase usually starts on Day 2, or once late registration closes and a set fraction of the field is gone. Until then, eliminations award chips and nothing else.

Compare this with a progressive knockout, the format IkaSolver calls Squid. In a PKO, your bounty is known, it grows as you eliminate players, and it matters enormously who you knock out. In a mystery bounty, the bounty is unknown, it never grows, and it doesn't matter who you knock out — a draw is a draw. The two formats look alike on the lobby page and play almost nothing alike.

The only number that matters

During the bounty phase, the expected value of a knockout is the total of the remaining envelopes divided by how many are left. At the start of the phase that is simply the bounty pool divided by the players remaining, and it is usually a large number relative to the stacks in play — frequently several buy-ins' worth of equity attached to a single elimination.

It doesn't stay there. Every envelope pulled changes the average. If the big prizes are still in the pool, the average rises as small envelopes are drawn; the moment a top prize is claimed it drops sharply. Most rooms display what has been drawn. Watch it. A player who treats a knockout at the start of the phase the same as one after the two biggest envelopes are gone is making a mistake worth many big blinds.

To use the number at the table, convert it into big blinds. If the average envelope is worth 40 big blinds at the current level and a covered opponent shoves for 12, the pot you are being offered is not 12 big blinds plus the blinds — it is that plus a 40-big-blind prize that pays only if you call and win. Hands that are clear folds in chip-EV become clear calls. This is the same mechanism as a PKO, only larger and simpler, because the prize is flat.

Before the bounty phase

There are no bounties yet, so it's tempting to play this stretch like a normal tournament. Don't — chips are worth more here than in a normal tournament, for two reasons that pull in the same direction.

  • Survival has a bounty attached. Reaching the bounty phase gives you access to a pool of prizes that busted players never touch. Every marginal all-in you avoid before the phase preserves that access.
  • Coverage is a weapon you buy in advance. You can only collect a bounty from a player you cover. Arriving at the bounty phase with a stack that covers most of the table turns every short-stack shove into a freeroll on an envelope. Arriving short means you are the one being freerolled.

The practical shape of this: tighten marginal tournament-life decisions, stay aggressive in spots where you can win chips without risking your stack, and treat the last few levels before the phase as the most important accumulation window in the event.

During the bounty phase

Now the incentives flip hard. With a large average envelope in play, the correct adjustments are big enough that intuition trained on normal tournaments actively misleads you.

  1. Call covered shoves very wide. Against a short stack you cover, the envelope is often worth more than the pot. The calling range a solver produces here is far wider than most players believe is even defensible.
  2. Isolate — don't let the table split the draw. If a covered short stack shoves and you call, a second caller doesn't just cut your pot equity: they halve your chance at the envelope. Re-raising to isolate is worth more than it looks.
  3. Short stacks: expect to be called, and shove accordingly. Your fold equity is low because everyone who covers you is calling wide. Shove ranges shift towards hands that play well against wide calls, and away from pure fold-equity shoves.
  4. Coverage beats position. The most valuable seat is the one that covers the most players, not the button. Chip leaders should look for confrontations; short stacks should avoid being covered by a caller who is correct to call with almost anything.
  5. Re-evaluate as envelopes leave. When the top prizes are drawn, the average can fall by half or more in a single orbit. Your calling ranges should tighten immediately. When the top prizes are still in late in the phase, the opposite: aggression against covered players is worth even more.

Solving mystery bounty spots properly

Because a knockout in the bounty phase is worth a flat expected amount that doesn't depend on who you eliminate, it's a simpler structure to model than a PKO. A practical study routine

  1. Take a real structure you play. Work out the average envelope at the start of the bounty phase in big blinds at the level it typically begins.
  2. Build a short-stack shove spot — one covered player at 10–15bb, you at 30bb+ — and solve it three times: with no bounty, with the starting average, and with the average after the top prizes are gone.
  3. Compare the calling ranges side by side. The gap between the three is the entire lesson; the exact hands matter less than the size of the shift.
  4. Load the bounty solve into the trainer and play the spot until calling with a hand that felt absurd feels routine.
  5. Repeat multiway: a covered shove with one caller already in. The isolation decision is where most players leave the most value.

Common mistakes

  • Playing the pre-bounty phase for knockouts. There is nothing to collect yet. Chips are the prize.
  • Using PKO instincts. Nobody has a big bounty to hunt. Every covered player is worth the same draw.
  • Not tracking the envelopes. The average can double or halve within a level. Ranges built on the starting average are wrong an hour later.
  • Calling wide against players you don't cover. No coverage, no envelope. The pot odds are the pot odds.
  • Flat-calling a covered shove with another player behind. Every extra caller is another claim on the same envelope.
